How many times have gone to eat something from your fridge only to find it’s gone a little mouldy? In most instances, this is due to not checking the use-by date which acts as a guide to the lifeline of the product.
Certain foods last surprising well when stored in fridges and coldstores. Others such a fruit and vegetables can spoil much sooner, like the classic examples we list right here.
Bananas
Once bananas are fully ripened they quickly start to deteriorate. You can tell the age of the banana and judge how old it is simply by looking at the condition of its skin. As it starts to turns black you will quickly notice a rapid deterioration in the condition of the fruit. Experts recommend leaving bananas out of fridges and fruit bowls due to them affecting other fruits and vegetables. Store them separately. You can hang them from a banana holder on a kitchen counter.
Berries
Once purchased, it’s best to refrigerate fresh berries to keep them as fresh as possible for as long as you can. Sadly, even when you do this the chances are fresh berries will only last for a couple of days at best. This is the same for all berry types, even when you store them correctly. Fresh berries are delicious, just make sure you wash them prior to eating and check them carefully for signs of deterioration.
Broccoli
Broccoli is packed with healthy vitamins and a popular vegetable to use as an accompaniment for Sunday lunches, stir-fries, soups or salads. Once you buy broccoli from a grocery store it’s advisable to store it in a chilled setting like a refrigerator or a cold store. Keep it in the salad compartment of the fridge but make sure it is well away from other fruits or vegetables which make it spoil quicker. Even with careful storage, expect the lifespan of a head of broccoli to last a week at best.
